Hardly any waste and a short chain
Ingredients are by far the largest contributor to CO2 emissions in our chain. That is why we do everything we can to prevent food waste. Unlike supermarkets and restaurants, we purchase the ingredients based on your order and you receive them in exactly the right quantities. We hardly have any food waste in our chain and home chefs who cook with HelloFresh waste an average of 38% less food worldwide than if they prepare dinner themselves [(Global Food Waste Study, 2020)](https:/ /cdn.hellofresh.com/gb/cms/Sustainability/Summary_GlobalFoodWasteStudy.pdf). Moreover, HelloFresh has a super short chain: we avoid extra stops on our routes and prefer to source ingredients from nearby, so that they do not take too long in transit and are fresh. to stay.

In this way, HelloFresh meals produce fewer emissions than comparable meals from restaurant deliveries or supermarkets, as shown by an ISO 14040-compliant life cycle assessment completed in April 2022. In the Benelux, a HelloFresh meal produces an average of 11% less CO2 emissions than a comparable meal made with ingredients from the supermarket and 3% less than a meal delivered by a restaurant.

HelloFresh commissioned an ISO 14040 compliant and peer-reviewed life cycle assessment (LCA), which shows that cooking with HelloFresh produces lower CO2 emissions than both restaurant delivery services and cooking with supermarket ingredients.

This study is based on an analysis of meals from three different categories (beef, chicken, vegetarian) delivered by HelloFresh in four regional markets, representing 80% of the total in 2020 annual volume of HelloFresh represent:

  • Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg;

  • Germany and Austria;

  • United States;

  • Australia.

The study compared the environmental impact of HelloFresh meals with meals prepared with supermarket ingredients and meals purchased from restaurant delivery services. The research covers the entire cycle, from the production of meal ingredients and packaging materials to waste management at operational level.

In every market studied, meals prepared with HelloFresh had a lower climate impact than meals purchased at grocery stores and through restaurant deliveries. In both cases, the HelloFresh meals had a lower contribution to global warming. Based on this information and several other factors, including sales data and market breakdown, we calculated a weighted average for each market and total global business.

When calculating CO2 emissions per meal - in addition to the average impact (kgCO2e) per meal for each supply system mentioned in the study - we took into account various factors such as sales data and market distribution.

To To calculate the average CO2 emissions per meal, we first calculated an average of the CO2 impact of each type of meal. For example, the impact of a beef burger from HelloFresh in the Benelux is 6.4 kgCO2e. We then averaged the obtained local impact of each meal type, weighted by the amount of protein types sold in the same year.

Finally, the difference in CO2 emissions between HelloFresh's meals and those of its competitors has been calculated as a percentage, by looking at the average greenhouse effect of the three supply systems.
The CO2 emissions of HelloFresh meals in the Benelux are on average 3% lower than that of restaurant deliveries and 11% lower than that of supermarkets. This means that HelloFresh meals generally have a lower impact on the climate.
